Update on Swindon Bingo Hall Closure

Last week we reported on another very sad closure of the bingo Hall in central Swindon, with Mecca Bingo saying that they had sold the hall to the Swindon Town Council, hence the closure and the Swindon Town Council having earmarked the Mecca Bingo Club site for an urban renewal project, but apparently still happy for the bingo club to continue operations.

However this was not the case and Mecca had closed the doors of the club, giving members as little as one weeks' notice of the closure.

Many residents and members of the club are very upset about the closure and have voiced their concerns to the press. With the result that Swindon Councilor for economic development and regeneration seems to be listening to them. They have said that talks were in the pipeline between themselves and Mecca Bingo area manager in respect of keeping the bingo venue open for the time being. The regeneration plan has no timescale at present and they want to look into the potential of keeping the bingo club in operations. The Council wants to point out to Mecca Bingo the importance of the club to the people. In this instance it appears as though Bingo does have a voice, the voice of the people who this club is so important to! Let's hope it works.
