Celebrity designer Gavril Postnikov is involved in a bid to save historic cinemas in Aldershot that have been earmarked for demolition, one building houses the Gala Bingo Club. It has been proposed that the bingo club and cinema be destroyed to make way for the redevelopment of the Kings Centre.
It is Mr. Postnikov's opinion that the proposed development will ruin the towns historical standing and says that the old buildings have so much potential, if people could just look past the dirt and grime they would realize that the cinema and bingo club have intrinsic historical value.
He quotes the fact that both Grand Central Station and the Empire State building were earmarked for demolition until the people of New York realized their historical value and equates the loss of these building to these bastions of New York history.
Kevin McCloud the presenter of Grand Designs supports Mr. Postnikov completely in his campaign, he says that The Empire Cinema could be used for entertainment purposes rather than Princes Hall and the bingo club should be preserved.
Mr. Postnikov drew a picture of the old bingo hall for an exam project and feels that these are both really beautiful buildings.
