The Mecca Bingo division of the Rank Group has been seen this year to be battling on, regardless, and the struggle seems to be paying off. Last week their shares reach an all time low, but this week Mecca bingo are reporting that both revenues and shares are up.
Land based bingo clubs have been taking a beating over the last couple of years, and a number of external factors have been to blame for this. But these clubs seem determined to beat the odds and stay on track. Yes, there have been some bingo club closures but most of the UK bingo operations companies are trying to keep these to a minimum. The Rank group and Mecca Bingo per se, have enjoyed a little leniency from the government and Mecca Bingo have managed to obtain licenses for 83 adult gaming centres, 64 of which are already in operation. These adult gaming centre licenses allow bingo clubs to split their premises in order to operate more high paying slot machines. It was scarping the bottom of the barrel to get these in place, but the knock on effect appears to be paying off. The Government restricts the amount of £500 slot machines that a bingo club is allowed, but this loophole in the law was found and seems to be working. Rank has been making some pretty stringent cost cutting measures throughout their Mecca Bingo clubs, not least of these is the introduction of Costa Coffee outlets to the bingo clubs.
